Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Vienna, 2 June 2021 To: All Delegations/Permanent Missions to the OSCE All Partners for Co-operation OSCE Secretariat OSCE Institutions OSCE Field Operations SAVE THE DATE – 25 JUNE 2021 Excellencies, Delegates, Colleagues, I would like to bring to your attention the second in a series of expert roundtables on disinformation and freedom of the media organized by the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media on 25 June 2021 in the afternoon. The event takes place online. The topic of this roundtable will be “Disinformation and media self-regulation”. (The first one was held in May, see https://www.osce.org/representative-on-freedom-of-media/483650). Audiences’ trust in news media, traditional or online, rests on the search for accurate and fact-based information. The principles of fairness and separation of facts and opinions are the core values of professional journalism worldwide. In abiding by them in their reporting, journalists build credibility with their audience and provide a public service. By blurring the lines between false and true, disinformation undermines public trust in professional quality journalism and its role in a democratic society. The mechanisms to preserve journalism standards are well known: voluntary self-regulation, such as media councils, and codes of practice. These enable communication with the audience and the public at large. Efforts are also being made to apply these mechanisms in the social media domain and for other online speech. Fact-checking and media literacy initiatives by, and for, the media, which recently gained wider support, also aim at improving understanding and communication between the public and the press. The second expert roundtable meeting will discuss reports on relevant efforts by journalists’ associations and self-regulation bodies to stop, prevent and counteract disinformation in the media, so as to determine best practices and provide recommendations from the Representative on Freedom of the Media.

Russian/English translation will be available, but only to the registered participants by connecting to the event via the Zoom platform. Otherwise the roundtable will be streamed live for those unable to register. Participants are requested to register for the event by sending an email to Ms. Alexandra Davydova alexandra.davydova@osce.org by 22 June 2021. If you have any questions or need additional information on the event, please direct them to Mr. Andrey Rikhter at andrey.rikhter@osce.org. I very much hope that you or your representatives and experts will be able to join us at the event.

Yours sincerely, Juergen Heissel, Director/FOM
